The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Fauna Project

A team of nine completed this week's survey under hot and partly sunny conditions. The sponge-like mouthparts of a fly are called labella and are located at the end of its proboscis. The following photos of the cactus fly show the proboscis first retracted, then extended as the fly mops up something on a stone wall.
