The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Fauna Project

The morning was warm and mostly sunny as seven volunteers completed this week's survey. The true flies (order diptera) have only one pair of wings. Their second pair are modified into halteres, club-like structures that assist in balance. The photo of a crane fly shown below gives a clear view of this curious feature.
