Fauna Project

Warm temperatures were offset slightly by mostly overcast skies as our party of four conducted this week's survey. The true bugs (order Hemiptera) are often rather confusing to people not familiar with insect classification. One of the distinguishing features of this group is their method of feeding: they suck liquids through tube-like mouthparts. This apparatus is obvious in the photo of the Large Milkweed Bug shown below.
