Nine participants enjoyed an unseasonably warm sunny morning for this week's survey. The variety of moths was amazing. Because of the large number of species (about 2,000 have been recorded in the Hill Country), moth identifications are often challenging. Note the similarity between the Bent-line Carpet and The Gem (male) shown below. The felt-like cocoon made by the Puss Caterpillar, or Asp, has a lid at the top; it will flip open when the adult Flannel Moth emerges.
