Fauna Project

This week's survey was conducted by four volunteers during a cool, foggy morning which gave way to sunny skies by mid-morning. Some of our butterfly species have different color forms in winter vs. summer broods. Two sulphurs shown below are distinctive examples. Although light yellow during the spring and summer (see photo from March), both Orange and Dainty Sulphurs, shown below, are often much darker in the winter, helping them absorb the sun's warmth more efficiently.
